IMO, most of the chat in towns are not worth paying attention to. I already lived through middle and high school, I don't need to voluntarily subject myself to that kind of childishness from many of the thers in town.

Most of the time if there is any kind of conversation, it is an arguement and you are almost guaranteed to not be able to get 1 counter arguement in before someone gets pissy and starts swearing or throwing newb around.

Too many immature people ruin general conversation in town.

I mostly ignore the stuff that is said in town, often going to the least populated instance immediately. For me, all the nonsense being discussed, between the trade spam, the people shouting out for a "bf" or a "gf", or the "nude" dancing, is little more than a waste of time. I just wish that I could find a couple of people who realize that "roleplay" does not just equal PvE, but means that you approach the world as your character, whether in PvE or in PvP.

Until then, I travel with Gwen, who is a far better conversationalist than 90% of the people hanging about in towns.

Gwen doesn't aggro and occasionally heals you. Also she knows more about the game as all of us will ever learn
She will stop following and stay put, wherever you want her to stay.

Just spend 30 seconds in Marhan's Grotto and you'll never want to turn your local chat back on ever. Trust me, turning on local chat there is like dipping your hand into boiling water, you flinch and jerk your hand back in a split second. It's sadly turned into the idiot's hangout.

Henge of Denravi used to be a decent place to hang out, before all the chaos of the 'LFG DD' spam. But my favorite place outside of our guild to chat and meet quality players would be Fisherman's Haven. Plus the scenery is beautiful.

Follow Suilebhain's example, and when you map to the larger towns, manually select one of the highest numbered instances.
These are usually populated with people that also choose to locate there as opposed to the automated "active district" mapping.
You tend to find people that are actually interested playing the game, taking breaks and doing inventory house keeping. And since you usually find more serious veteran players there (that is if they even dane to travel to the earlier towns anymore) , getting questions answered without being called names or mocked is generally the rule, not the exception. Also, general chat is usually alot more "civilized".
Scammers, spammers, "cyber" seekers & generic jerks seem to avoid the less populated districts since there is no mob anonymity.

So i'm not going there to chat with people. Some conversations there are quite funny, though disturbing
really. random arena is not a place you want to chat. people literally go in there looking for a fight. I was doing some arena for a bit, waiting for someone else in my guild to log on for some GvG. and this guy was in the district, just looking for a fight, i didn't care about him, but i couldn't help but notice that he was STILL there after we got 10 consecutive wins and finally lost because one of our players had to leave, and we got stuck with a guy who disconnected right away, anyway, the guy in the district was still there when we came back, and he had been there fr the past 20 minutes. i checked the district later, and a bit later and so on, when he finally left he had been there for ATLEAST 1 hour and 20 minutes, doing NOTHING but flaming people.

really. Random Arena is not a place you want to be for chatting.

I saw another thread where someone called Gwen a brat. As Ms. Kitty pointed out, Gwen is extremely obedient, will only follow if you ask her to, and additionally is extremely grateful for small kindnesses, like flowers. The healing is nice, too. She seems to heal my warrior alot.

Now, if we could all find a common time to populate the game in the higher numbered districts, I am sure our in-game experiences would be enhanced.

its pretty simple really. over zealous incosiderate traders spamming the main chat have made it impossible to get group or other activities going in most towns

there is a trade channel, use it traders, leave it out of the white chat

Marhan's Grotto, Fishermans Haven and to a lesser degree the Ice Caves seem to be the casual chat areas. The staging area for the Random areas as well.

I'm just glad I still have my private unpolluted spot on the map, Port Sledge.

... I probably shouldn't have mentioned that.

Sadly the trade channel (in major cities) has the same sell/buy spams share with local chat. Assume all these sellers/buyers put their ads in trade channel only, it would appear less than 0.5 sec. The current trading method simply doesnt work.

Well, it seems pretty obvious to me that the "WTB" and "WTS" local chat spammers are not the brightest crayons in the box, and logically we can assume they don't even look at Riverside Inn that much (they might all be in the buy/sell forums or not on the forums at all)

So here's an idea: why don't we compile a list of places where we all hang out? Most of the people who post here are above room-temperature I.Q., and i'm sure often get bored in-game periodically and just want to chat. Call it a GWGuru meet-n'-greet if you like

So far i've heard:
Fisherman's
Port Sledge
Ice Tooth
(to a lesser extent) Grotto

@complaining about trading spammers

Thats true, in very many other MMORPG's the've switched to setting up your own little shop, and that wouldn't be a bad idea I think.

I mean, trying to sell stuff in droks is a mather of luck, even if there is a buyer, they almost spam just as hard WTB [instert random weapon]!!!!!!1!!!etc.

And with shops its not waiting, continuously spamming, for a buyer.

Just leave the computer on when going to school/work, or leave guild wars running while you do some internet browsing or something.

Isn't that much better?

By the way, pre is still my favourite, due the non-sense converstions about pigs or whatever
